Readings for today: Exodus 1-14
The timeline jumps 400 years into the future from the end of Genesis. The honored clans of Israel, because of Joseph, now find themselves subjugated into slavery because their story is no longer remembered among the Egyptians. The new Pharaoh fears their vitality and strength, and decrees that Israelite boys are to be drowned in order to weaken their tribes. It is from this scenario, that Moses enters the Biblical narrative. Moses, a Hebrew whose name means, "drawn out of the water", becomes first a member of the Egyptian Royal Family, and then, after discovering his true identity, becomes a fugitive and flees into the wilderness.
Today's reading covers some of the most enthralling of all biblical stories. The infancy narrative of Moses being rescued by Pharaoh's daughter from the Nile, the Burning Bush and God's giving the NAME for the freedom of His people, the dueling in power between God, through Moses, and Pharaoh, ie the 10 plagues on Egypt. The final plague, the death of the firstborn and the Passover... and The parting of the Red Sea. All of that is today.
