Day 21 - January 23

SatJan232010 ByChris ChristopherTaggedNo tags

Today's Reading: 1 Samuel 16-27

Something to Ponder:
What Goliaths have you successfully slain?  What was in your sling?

Reminder:
As we finish our third week of reading, remember to read ATTENTIVELY, even sections that are repetitive .  Why is there repetition in the Bible?  What does that say about us?  What does that say about God?

The Lutheran Word for Today:
"It is God alone from whom we receive all good and by whom we are delivered from all evil.  I suppose this is the reason why we Germans from times of old also call God by the very name "God", derived from our word "good" because He is an eternal fountain which gushes forth nothing but the good and from which flows all that is good and is so called."  Martin Luther - 1529

As I read the story of David and Goliath, the story that we all have heard many times as children and adults, I realized that I had missed something.  Being a visual and auditory learner I visualized the exposure that David had.  He came out to meet Goliath with minimal clothing, 5 stones and a sling.  I think as we meet our Goliaths in life, we are afraid of our own exposure.  If I am facing a Goliath I want to know that there is someone there to go with me.  I will have prayed and know that God is with me, but I need physical reinforcement.  What that means is that I think it is our human nature to take someone with us to the battle.  Often times when we go to battle, we don't know what we are going to face.  Whether we are facing surgery / medical test, a school bully, legal litigation, or a loss of someone or something, we want to know there is someone to hold on to.  Therefore, our faith is troubled and we are not fully trusting God.  One situation that I think of is a child who is being bullied.  Typically, the bully will have their friends backing him or her up as they bully another child.  The child is normally alone when things get bad because no one else wants to run the risk of having to deal with the bully on a personal level.    So, when I go to battle I am glad that no matter how exposed I am, God has blessed me with people face it with me.
